Barbat (often “Barbat na Rabu”) is a village/settlement on the island of Rab in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar county of Croatia.

It is the first village you encounter when arriving by ferry to Rab.

The area has typical Mediterranean climate and vegetation: olive trees, herbs, pine, etc., and warm summers with lots of sunshine.

History

There are early Christian historical remains, notably a fortress/church on the hill of St. Damian (Sv. Damjan). This was a military lookout / defensive fortress.

Barbat has long traditions with fishing, agriculture (olives, grapes), and ship-building (since early 20th century shipbuilding noted).

The architecture reflects old stone buildings; the Villa Hotel Barbat is built on foundations of a Benedictine monastery.

Typical Foods

Fresh seafood straight from the local fishing boats. Fish taverns are common.

Olive oil and wine produced locally. Vegetables from nearby markets, lamb from island pastures.

The Restaurant Barbat offers lobster or spiny lobster, with local grown olive oil and spices.

Local sweets: Rab cake (“Rapska torta”) is an island specialty.

Activities & Nature

Pebble beaches, little gravel/sandy stretches along the coast. Swimming, sun-bathing, enjoying the sea.

Promenade: a newly built ~7 km long promenade for jogging, walking, biking.

Hiking trails & walking paths: e.g., trails to St. Damian, coastal or through olive groves, etc.

Diving, snorkeling, boating. The clear Adriatic sea, and bays (including nearby islands or islets) offer good snorkeling / small-boat possibilities.

Exploring historical ruins, churches, and fortifications. The hill of St. Damian is one.

Shops & Amenities

There are local restaurants, taverns, cafés. Many host fresh seafood, local products.

Smaller shops / markets for local produce, olive oil, honey, wine etc. Also probably small grocery shops.

Festivals & Events

Kamenica (or “Karmenica”) feast: held on July 16th. Rich gastronomic offerings; celebration for locals and tourists.

Fish festival in Barbat: an event celebrating local fish; often includes concerts, etc.

Nature & Landscape

Mediterranean coastal environment: rocky & pebble beaches, crystal-clear water.

Pine, olive and herbs (Mediterranean flora); islands, bays, small islets.

Hiking trails with views over sea channels, over the Barbat Channel, views to other islands; vantage points like hills.

Mild climate: not excessively hot in summer; milder winters.
